Tips for Sending Out Wedding Invitations

  • Timing

Invitations are a tricky thing. You’ll have to time it just right. It shouldn’t be too early or your guests could check it off as a to-do-later and fail to send an RSVP on time. It shouldn’t be too late either or a large percentage of the guest list may have already made other plans and so not be able to make it to your special day. Send your invitations 6-8 weeks before the Big Day.

  • Font

I don’t know what it is with weddings and swirly fonts. This, in and of itself, is not a bad thing. However, fonts that are too elaborate may hinder your guests from discerning the information in your invitation. It’s nice to have a few loops in the mix, but try not to overdo it. Make sure you include a more readable font so your message does not get lost in translation. Or in the mail.

  • Design

Go for continuity and tie up your invitation design with the theme for your wedding. If you’re having a garden wedding, floral is the way to go. For a beach wedding, why not feature one with sand and surf and maybe even a sailboat? You can also use these Rustic Wedding Invitations if you’re more into the cozy allure of the countryside.

What to Include in the Wedding Invitation

  • You’ll need to include your names, of course, as well as the names of any of the other hosts, like your parents or your partner’s parents. But don’t just stop with the first names. Make sure to include everyone’s surnames as well.
  • It’s also a good thing to tell people that it’s a wedding invitation. Write something along the lines of “we request the pleasure of your company as we celebrate our union”.
  • Just in case you’ve invited some out-of-towners, include the complete address (of both venues if the ceremony and reception are located at separate areas).
  • Indicate the day, time (in the morning, afternoon or evening), as well as the time the reception starts (if there’s a gap between that and the ceremony).
  • Lastly, don’t forget to include the deadline for the RSVP.

What NOT to Include

Do not mention money or the registry in your wedding invitation. You might think that it’s practical to do so these days, but there are countless others who might beg to differ. And so, in the name of good taste and good practice, avoid the temptation to tell your guests that you prefer receiving cash over gifts. You can inform them by word of mouth, but it’s considered a tacky thing to put in your invite.
