Mermaids in Every Shape and Size

The idea of mermaids is not just something that has been passed on from generation to generation. It also seems to be cross-cultural. Both the west and the east have their own versions of what a mermaid is and what she does.

  • Greek mythology gave us the siren, who were said to lure sailors to their deaths with their haunting and irresistible songs.
  • In Gaelic myth, the mermaid is believed to be a seal-like creature called a selkie who can transform into a human when she removes her sealskin. If a mortal man finds the skin and hides it, he can compel her to marry him. However, in the stories, she inevitably finds her sealskin, and returns to the ocean, leaving husband and children behind.
  • In Japan, they are known as the ningyo, which is said to have the body of a fish, the head of a woman and the mouth of a monkey. It is believed that anyone who eats its flesh would be granted long life.
  • The Indian god, Vishnu, is also said to have an avatar called Matsya. Matsya is an entity that is portrayed as either a gigantic fish or a creature with the torso of a human and the bottom half of a fish.

The Coloring Advantage

Whether or not those mermaid facts tickled your fancy, you’ll definitely not go wrong with these coloring pages. But it’s not just fun and games. Coloring can benefit your child in more ways than one.

  • Improve your child’s handwriting. Coloring does not only build hand strength, it can also contribute to your child’s dexterity in handling pens.
  • It has also been scientifically proven that coloring can assist in the development of a child’s ability to focus. In this age of short-term gratification, short attention span has also become prevalent. Curb this tendency by allowing your child to take his time in coloring.
  • Even the mere act of choosing which colors to use and grabbing them can be beneficial in the long term. This paired with learning the discipline of coloring within the lines can improve the child’s hand-eye coordination.
  • Talking to your child as s/he is coloring can also aid in language development. While your child is busy coloring in these mermaid drawings, you can talk about the interesting mermaid stories you just read.

And when you’re done with this batch, why don’t you take a look at our Coloring Pages for Girls?
