If you’re new at the game and want to try your hand at playing with silhouettes, then here are a few tips that you can use for your project.

• Time Is of the Essence

For outdoor shots, you need to rely on forces of nature over which you have no control. All you can do is time your session just right. Taking a silhouette means your background has to be brighter than your subject. Take your photos during sunrise or sunset, when the sun is positioned in the far horizon. As an added note, these times are also when you can capture some of the more dramatic shots.

• Position

Of course, it’s also possible to take a silhouette shot indoors. For studio shots, all you have to do is position your subject between you and the source of light. Or you can place your subject in a shaded area, with a well-lit sky as your background, angle your camera just right, and you can pull that one off too.

• Ready, Set, Action

For added effect, don’t just let your subject stand there. Get your model to do some action poses. If it’s for a Baby Photography session, then let the parents raise the baby up in the air. For a couple shot, let them form hearts with their hands. Or you can also just let your subjects jump for something a bit more dynamic.
